What is the 2023 Car Gadget You Must Have?

Of all the accessories you can add to your car in 2023, one is the most essential. Wheel desks, interior LED lights, pocket organizers, headrest hooks, and cupholder diffusers may all make time in your car a little easier, but they can’t save you any money.

There is, however, one gadget that may be able to save you thousands of dollars if you are ever involved in a car accident or your vehicle is damaged by vandals. That gadget is a dashboard camera or dashcam for short. Let’s see how they work and why they’re so important.

What is a Dashcam?

A dashcam is a digital video recorder that you mount on the dashboard of your car, truck, or other vehicle. The dashcam continuously records information visible through the front windshield and sometimes other windows or even the car’s interior.

These devices can cost less than $100 and they can be installed in minutes. This brief investment of time and money can pay off in a big way if you are in a car accident. Quite simply, a dashcam shows what actually happened in an incident in a way that is difficult if not impossible for someone to refute.

Demonstrating Liability

Footage from a dashcam shows what happened leading up to an accident, during an accident, and after an accident. The pictures are more accurate than the memory of anyone who experienced the trauma of the accident, either as a victim or a witness.

If someone tries to blame you for causing the accident, recordings from your dashcam could show that you did nothing wrong and keep you from being dropped by your insurance company. The footage may also reveal the identity or at least provide clues to the party who did something negligent or reckless that caused the accident. You might be able to recover thousands of dollars if you suffered injuries and you have the means to prove that someone else’s actions caused your injuries.

By proving your innocence and another person’s liability, you can use a dashcam recording to destroy any allegations against you and establish the validity of a claim against the at-fault driver. In addition to accidents, a dashcam can protect you in case of road rage incidents or improper police action.

Dashcams are Legal in Florida

Many people are concerned that recording information with a dashcam is a violation of privacy or might violate other laws. In Florida, as in most states, dashcam recording is allowed as long as the dashcam is not set up in a way that dangerously obstructs the driver’s view out of the windshield.  Furthermore if your dashcam is recording audio inside the vehicle, you may want to make sure all passengers are aware and agree to it.

In addition, dashcam footage is admissible in court to demonstrate liability. However it is important not to alter footage, even if all you are trying to do is cut out scenes that have nothing to do with the accident.
